You Can't Use Facts to Disprove the Big Lie
Because people's belief's in it are not fact based
I see a lot of articles laying out why the big lie is in fact a lie. And additional articles calling on conservative leaders to denounce the big lie. All with the goal of reducing the number of people who believe it.
It won’t work.
Believers of the big lie fall into one or more of three groups. First are the conspirists. Around 20% of Americans think the world is flat. Richard Hofstadter wrote The Paranoid Style in American Politics back in 1964. And he was writing a history of this country from the start.
So you’ve got a fair number of people that are going to believe a conspiracy over any “facts” presented by “the government.” The only way you can flip these people is to make the big lie the official government position and the conspiracy is that the election was fairly counted.
Second are the people that can’t understand how anyone would vote for Biden. They believe in Trump, everyone they know believes in Trump, Trump is the light, is the way, is the one. If all that is true, then if the vote was fairly counted, then Biden wouldn’t get any votes.
To this group, and again it’s sizeable, any votes for Biden, any at all, are proof that the vote was rigged. And wrapped up in that is that anyone who truly did vote for Biden is not a real American, does not love this country, and should not have their vote counted.
Third are the ones for whom the only acceptable outcome is for Trump, and Republicans across the board, to win. It doesn’t matter how. It doesn’t matter if our Democracy is destroyed in the process. What matters is having the right people in office.
For this group, if the election was fairly counted is irrelevant. To them, the only “fair” election is one where their candidates win. And if that win means no more fair elections, all the better.
There is certainly a fair amount of cross-over in the above groups. But it’s safe to say that it’s over a majority of the Republican party and around 35% of the country as a whole. And they are not going to change their mind on this. And none of them support truly fair elections, unless their candidates win.
