Trump is Proposing a Very Different United States
If the Democratic Party cannot come up with a COMPELLING alternative, he'll succeed
Trump is proposing changes so fundamental that many in the Democratic Party are viewing them as unworthy of debate and that we just need to get the voters to return to sanity. This is a mistake.
Trump is truly working to return us to the government we had before WWII. We’ve always had a segment of our electorate desirous of this. But now it’s become the policy of the administration. And has the support of roughly ½ the voters.
The biggest change is isolationism, and to a degree mercantilism. Both economically and militarily. And he’s clearly serious about this, as are a lot of the people he’s appointing.
This means not just locking down the border, but reducing legal immigration. This means tariffs not just for revenue, but to reduce the globalization of our economy. This means getting out of defense treaties and eliminating most of our overseas deployment of our troops.
Selling the FDR/Reagan paradigm won’t work as a counter to this. The Democratic Party needs to come up with a new paradigm that can gain more support than the MAGA philosophy. Otherwise people will take the offered new approach (MAGA) over the no longer acceptable FDR/Reagan approach.
And don’t confuse Trump’s autocratic efforts (universally bad) with his isolation efforts (a valid paradigm). If you try to paint all of Trump’s efforts as bad - most people will tune that out.
