If President Biden had a bad night, then we recover (suggestion below). But if what we saw last night is President Biden a little off his game because he was sick, but basically him at close to his best, then he is not only not up for a presidential campaign, but he is not capable of handling the presidency for the next 4 years.
So should he withdraw? I trust the party leadership to evaluate not his efforts last night, but take a hard look at his mental acuity, stamina, etc. and, if they find it lacking, talk to him about withdrawing.
And if they come to that conclusion, I think Joe Biden, who has spent his life serving this country, will do what’s best and withdraw. And there’s no shame in saying that at 80, he’s not on top of his game anymore and needs to turn it over to someone who is. And he can retire with the record of an amazing list of accomplishments.
If he chooses to go forward he needs to fight the story from the Republican side that he’s no longer capable of performing his job. That can’t be accomplished with scripted moments, press interviews, and advertising. Because the Republicans will answer all that with “you’re hiding Joe Biden because he’s no longer able to function.”
What I suggest is they set up town halls, across the country, and they have Kyle Clark (a very competent interviewer) to select the attendees and the questioners. And then moderate the questions from those voters and Biden’s answers.
If Biden does that, and comes across as energetic, knowledgeable, and thoughtful, then this issue is put to rest. It’s also very effective campaigning if he’s good at it. And comes across much better than Trump’s rallies where he spouts off and everyone just listens.
If not this idea, to have a prayer of winning, Biden needs to do something like this. Something that will put him out there to show he’s still got it and he just had a bad night.
Otherwise we lose.
